  • The Dot
or, The Calming Acceptance of Insignificance

Where do we fit in a universe this vast? What does it mean to exist — briefly, quietly — on a planet that barely registers on the cosmic scale?

These questions inspired The Dot, a three-part series by artist Justin Hossle. Influenced by the words of Carl Sagan, Hossle explores the tension between our planet’s smallness and the deep meaning we find in being here at all. The work invites reflection on a central paradox: we are almost nothing — and somehow, everything.

    The Sunbeam
On the left, Sunbeam draws from the 1990 Pale Blue Dot photograph, taken by Voyager 1 from nearly 4 billion miles away. Earth appears as a pixel in a shaft of sunlight — almost invisible. Hossle reinterprets this moment with three inlaid rays of light and a nearly hidden blue dot. It’s easy to miss — a reminder of how fragile and fleeting our presence really is.

    The System
At the center, System zooms out further, offering a scaled abstraction of our solar system. The sun and planets are represented by proportionally sized inlaid circles, arranged vertically. Earth, again marked in blue, is one quiet part of the whole. At the top sits Pluto — a small black dot. Though no longer a planet, its presence is both symbolic and sentimental, echoing the idea that even forgotten things still hold meaning.

    The Earthrise
On the right, Earthrise references the photo taken in 1968 by Apollo 8 astronaut William Anders — the first time humans saw Earth rising above another world. Here, a soft blue arc lifts over a layered wood horizon, set against uninterrupted walnut grain. The piece captures the stillness of space and the awe of seeing our planet from the outside: small, delicate, whole.

Across the series, Earth is consistently rendered in quiet blue. Whether as a dot in sunlight, a speck among planets, or a rising orb, it reminds us: the view may change, but the presence endures.

We are 26,000 light-years from the center of the Milky Way. One of billions of worlds. And yet, here we are — living, connecting, building, grieving, creating. The Dot is a meditation on that contradiction: that something so small can hold so much meaning.

  • (01) Baltic Birch with Walnut and Maple
Made using a 13-layer solid wood Baltic birch with a walnut face and maple inlay. Baltic birch is a sustainable product and will be stable as the seasons change, unlike other solid wood furniture pieces.

We have made it our signature look to expose the layers of Baltic birch. Not only does this give a nod to the designers of the mid-century era, it makes every piece a work of art, and a unique, one-of-a-kind, creation.

    (02) Finish

Pure Tung Oil, Boiled Linseed Oil, Beeswax, Carnauba Wax. The end result is a durable, water-resistant matte finish that feels like a silky-smooth piece of wood.

  • (01) How do I care for this product?

Details can be found on our FAQ page. That said, in general, treat the piece with kindness. A damp cloth is all you need to clean it (definitely no harsh chemicals), and the piece can be refreshed with a bit of furniture wax when needed.

    (02) How do I hang this piece?

The wall art has two D-ring picture hangers on the back with picture hanging wire spanning the width.

    (03) Can I buy just one?

Yes! The pieces sell individually, or as a tryptic of all three.

  • Baltic birch layers are a high quality, all hard-wood product that is sustainable, stable, and artful in design.

In some of our products, such as this one, we glue and stack the layers together.  Then, we cut them vertically so that you are able to see the striped layers turn on their sides.

It’s inspired by mid-century style, but is modern, minimalist, and a work of art.
